Ferrari protege Antonio Giovinazzi is the latest ex-Formula 1 driver to join the Formula E field as he lines up with Dragon Penske at the Diriyah season-opener this week. Some of his predecessors have gone on to become Formula E champions. Others have rapidly disappeared from the world of electric racing, like for example former Ferrari driver Felipe Massa.
Antonio Giovinazzi’s years in Formula 1 could be summed up as showing obviously impressive one-lap pace in certain qualifying sessions and solid race starts, but without being able to capitalize on these aspects and never really convincing anyone he was capable of being a consistent performer on Sunday.
Despite losing his Formula 1 seast, for Antonio Giovinazzi 2022 will still be a very busy season given the fact that alongside his experience in Formula E, the Italian driver will continue to keep some Formula 1 links thanks to Scuderia Ferrari. At the end of last year, Team Principal Mattia Binotto confirmed that Mick Schumacher would share the reserve role with fellow Ferrari Driver Academy racer Antonio Giovinazzi in 2022. This also means that Giovinazzi will be available to stand-in for Ferrari’s customers Haas and Alfa Romeo if needed.

Furthermore, a future for the Italian driver in the WEC series cannot be ruled out, as the Hypercar program will see Ferrari back on the track in the premier category starting from 2023.
When asked about Scuderia Ferrari’s prospects of returning back on top in the 2022 Formula One season, Antonio Giovinazzi explained: “For me Ferrari is like a family and I wish them all the best. Certainly we have improved, but we cannot know where we will be until the first qualifying session, when we discover how much others have improved.” – the Italian driver said, as reported by daily newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport.
