Twelve races over 30 overtakes, ten under this threshold: the 2022 Formula 1 season was eagerly awaited by F1 enthusiasts, as fans were curious to evaluate whether the return of ground effect cars would actually guarantee more battles on the track and therefore more entertainment. The expectations were partially met, but still there a few Sundays in which fans had to settle for just a few entertaining moments. The race with most overtaking moves in 2022 was the Brazilian Grand Prix which already in the Sprint event offered exciting duels during the 24 laps that decided the starting grid at Interlagos.
On the San Paolo circuit, there were 62 overtaking moves in the race, which was the record for the 2022 Formula 1 season ahead of the United States Grand Prix which saw 60 passes. The podium was completed by the inaugural race which was held in Bahrain by recording the beautiful duel between Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen for the first position. According to these statistics collected by the F1statsguru Twitter account (which obviously do not take into account the changes of position due to pit stops) in fourth place we find the unexpected Abu Dhabi Grand Prix ahead of a trio in fifth place which once again includes a surprising circuit among the three: together with Austria and Italy, in fact, there is Hungary thanks to a changing weather conditions that transformed a usually boring Sunday into an interesting race, won by Max Verstappen won started from tenth position.
The first Grand Prix with less than 50 passes is that of Belgium, while the top 10 is completed by the first edition of the Miami Grand Prix and another surprise, Montmelò, certainly not a place where overtaking is traditionally easy to see. If the Spanish Grand Prix exceeded the total of 40 overtaking moves, from tenth to eleventh position the difference is clear because in Canada and Saudi Arabia there were just over 30 overtakes despite the fact that on paper the Montreal and Jeddah tracks offer several possibilities of overtaking. France is the first track to drop below 30 passes, followed by Australia and Silverstone on equal stats.
Baku barely exceeded 20 (quite surprising data), while between 20 and ten overtakes we have the races in Mexico, Japan, Holland and Singapore. The penultimate place goes to Imola with just over ten overtaking moves also due to the first wet and then dry track which made the outside area of the track very dangerous. The last place of course goes to the Monaco Grand Prix with just five passes recorded during the course of the Grand Prix held on the Monte Carlo streets.
