Oscar Piastri has sparked discussion across the Formula 1 paddock after making a light-hearted but telling remark about Ferrari’s engine prospects, highlighting the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the Scuderia’s ability to match Mercedes in the new regulatory era.
Speaking ahead of the 2026 season in an interview with sponsor Quad Lock, the McLaren driver reflected on the competitive landscape in Formula 1, where Mercedes has once again positioned itself as the benchmark in power unit performance. While the Maranello team, led by Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, has emerged as one of the closest challengers on track, questions remain about whether the Italian side can fully capitalize on its potential.
Mercedes engine confidence contrasts with Ferrari doubts
Oscar Piastri emphasized that Mercedes had historically excelled when major engine regulation changes were introduced, referencing the dominant era that began in 2014 with the V6 hybrid engines. He suggested that Mercedes had set a standard that took rival manufacturers several years to approach, and indicated that there was strong confidence within the paddock that the German manufacturer could repeat that success under the 2026 regulations.
The Australian driver also acknowledged that McLaren, as a Mercedes customer team, could benefit significantly if the Silver Arrows once again hold a power unit advantage. He expressed optimism that Mercedes would maintain its competitive edge and continue supplying McLaren, underlining the importance of engine performance in shaping the championship battle.
At the same time, Oscar Piastri hinted that other manufacturers, including Ferrari, had not projected the same level of confidence. When the possibility of Ferrari encountering difficulties was raised, he reacted with a humorous remark, indirectly reinforcing the perception that the Scuderia still faces challenges in delivering a consistently dominant power unit package.
Ferrari’s ongoing struggle to return to the top
Ferrari’s title drought, stretching back to 2008, continues to weigh heavily on the team’s ambitions. Despite clear progress in recent seasons and a stronger start to the 2026 campaign, the gap to Mercedes remains significant. Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton have both demonstrated competitive pace in certain race conditions, but the Maranello team’s overall performance package has yet to consistently match that of its main rivals.
Technical concerns, including aspects of the SF-26’s rear-end design and long-term development limitations, have also been cited as potential obstacles. These factors could restrict Ferrari’s ability to respond effectively as the season progresses, particularly in an environment where marginal gains are decisive.
McLaren’s position and the Mercedes partnership
McLaren enters the 2026 campaign as the reigning Constructors’ Champion, having built on strong momentum from previous years. Oscar Piastri’s podium finish in Japan has further reinforced the team’s competitiveness, suggesting that McLaren is firmly in the fight at the front of the grid.
However, the relationship between McLaren and Mercedes has not been without tension. Earlier in the season, team principal Andrea Stella suggested that the level of technical transparency from Mercedes may not have been complete. Over time, McLaren is expected to deepen its understanding of Mercedes’ power unit systems, particularly in optimizing battery deployment and energy recovery strategies.
Even so, matching Mercedes’ level of performance remains a complex challenge. Historical data shows that overcoming a significant points deficit in the Constructors’ Championship is rare. Under the current scoring system, only one team has managed such a comeback in recent years—McLaren itself during the 2024 season against Red Bull.
Outlook for Ferrari, Mercedes, and the 2026 title fight
The battle between Mercedes, Ferrari, and McLaren is expected to intensify during the season. For the Italian side, the pressure is clear: Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton must extract maximum performance from the SF-26 while the team continues to refine its power unit and aerodynamic package.
Oscar Piastri’s comments, while delivered in a playful tone, reflect a broader sentiment within the paddock. Ferrari has the talent and resources to compete at the highest level, but consistency and technical execution will ultimately determine whether the Scuderia can finally end its long wait for championship success.
