With the official announcement of Lewis Hamilton joining Scuderia Ferrari in the 2025 Formula 1 championship, Carlos Sainz’s dream at Ferrari comes to an end: the Spaniard did not deserve such treatment.
On Lewis Hamilton’s day, Carlos Sainz took a back seat. “Another year together,” Ferrari writes on social media. There is little doubt that Carlos will fulfill his commitment as a Maranello driver, even though he is now separated within the team.
Carlos Sainz is a professional, and he has been one since he entered Formula 1, thanks to the teachings of his father, a rally champion. However, the announcement, released a month before the start of the 2024 Formula One season, does not help. It is often said that a driver racing for a contract renewal gives his best. Carlos Sainz finds himself in the opposite situation. He will hit the track from Bahrain knowing that his car in 2025 will be in the hands of Lewis Hamilton.
Ferrari could have waited until the summer break for the official announcement, but sometimes news starts spreading uncontrollably even without the teams’ intentions.
Carlos Sainz: the dream is over, but redemption will come
Whether Ferrari chose the timing or not, Hamilton’s arrival marks the end of Carlos Sainz’s dream in red. The Spaniard has never sworn eternal love to Maranello. It’s not his style. He is more calculating and rational than his emotionally expressive teammate Charles Leclerc.
Yet, he remains the last driver to have won with Ferrari. The only one capable of interrupting Red Bull’s dominance. Did he deserve such treatment? Certainly not.
Before Lewis Hamilton’s announcement, it seems that Carlos’ entourage was negotiating for a renewal. This was the driver’s desire, regardless of Charles Leclerc’s official confirmation that came before his, as if wanting to make the team hierarchy explicit. Carlos Sainz and his loyal followers would then have been informed of Lewis’ arrival only a few days ago.
Now Carlos finds himself forced to find a new placement for 2025. The most obvious option seems to be Sauber, waiting for it to become Audi. With the German manufacturer, Sainz Sr. won the Dakar Rally. The Mercedes route is also open. A premature promotion of Kimi Antonelli at Brackley could be unsettling, and who knows if they choose not to rely on the experience of the Spaniard. What is certain is that Carlos Sainz will continue to navigate his path in Formula 1 as always. Believing in himself, regardless of those who will always see him (mistakenly) as a second driver.
