American businessman Zak Brown, currently chief executive officer of McLaren Racing with overall responsibility for the business, feels that it is “only a matter of time” before Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz will score his first Formula One win.
Carlos Sainz joined the Maranello team from McLaren before the 2021 championship in order to replace Sebastian Vettel and has managed to score four podium finishes in his first year alongside the Maranello team.
His positive results led to a strong fifth place finish in the Formula 1 Driver Standings, ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris and his teammate Charles Leclerc, who was in his third year with Scuderia Ferrari:
“He’s a hell of a racing driver,” said Zak Brown when asked about the performance of his team’s former driver – “It’s only a matter of time until he starts winning grands prix. If he’s got a car underneath him capable of winning, Carlos will be on the top step of the podium for sure.” – he said.

Despite the fact that McLaren has usually chosen to select a world champion in its ranks, its recent line-ups of Carlos Sainz, Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo has broken this trend. When pointed out if he was flattered at the Maranello team changing its strategy to a similar recruitment model, Zak Brown replied: “I have not…obviously, I paid attention to them in the timing screens but there is not much you can do about what other people do. They’ve got two very good drivers. Carlos has done an outstanding job, that too was not a surprise.” – the McLaren boss concluded.
