Scuderia Ferrari may have had a dispiriting second round of the 2023 Formula 1 season, in Saudi Arabia, but the Maranello team can at least be happy with the progress made in terms of pit stops, as the Ferrari mechanics completed the fastest pit stop of the race which was held at the 6.174 km-motor racing circuit in Jeddah.
Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc had no chance of fighting for a podium finish due to the poor race pace on the hard tyres, with the Spanish driver finishing the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in sixth place, just ahead of his Maranello team-mate.
However, Ferrari are beginning to establish themselves as a top team in terms of fastest pit stops: Charles Leclerc’s Lap 16 stop was completed in 2.10 seconds, 0.26s faster than the Alpine mechanics managed to change all four tyres on Esteban Ocon’s single-seater.
In fact, the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix was this season’s second race and the second time in which Charles Leclerc’s mechanics proved to be the best at changing all four tyres, also doing so in a race-leading 2.22 seconds at the Bahrain International circuit two weeks ago.
It is said that you can’t win a Formula 1 race at the pits, but that you can lose it. While the pit stop times are a welcomed improvement for the Italian side, the hope is to be able to offer Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz a car capable of capitalizing on the pit stop times with a solid result on the track.
