Oliver Bearman’s Formula 1 future attracting growing interest beyond Ferrari
Oliver Bearman’s long-term Formula 1 future is becoming one of the most intriguing stories in the paddock, with reports suggesting that Red Bull is closely monitoring the Ferrari junior as opportunities at Maranello become increasingly difficult to secure.
The British driver has been part of the Ferrari Driver Academy since 2022 and quickly established himself as one of the team’s brightest prospects. His surprise Formula 1 debut for Ferrari at the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, when he stepped in for Carlos Sainz at short notice, immediately demonstrated that he possessed the pace and composure to compete at the highest level.
Since earning a full-time seat with Haas for the 2025 season alongside Esteban Ocon, Oliver Bearman has continued to strengthen his reputation. The 21-year-old has consistently delivered mature performances and, during the 2026 campaign, has already collected 18 championship points—comfortably outperforming his experienced teammate, who has managed just three.
Ferrari’s driver line-up leaves little room for Bearman
Despite repeatedly making it clear that his ultimate ambition is to race for Ferrari, the current circumstances at the Scuderia make that objective increasingly complicated.
Charles Leclerc recently committed his future to Ferrari with a long-term contract extension, while Lewis Hamilton has rediscovered impressive form since joining the Italian team. With both drivers delivering strong performances and leading Ferrari’s resurgence, there appears to be no obvious vacancy for Bearman in the foreseeable future.
That situation has naturally attracted the attention of rival teams looking to secure one of Formula 1’s most highly rated young talents before the Italian side can offer him a race seat.
David Croft believes Red Bull is watching closely
Speaking during the British Grand Prix weekend, Sky Sports F1 commentator David Croft revealed that Red Bull is believed to be following Oliver Bearman’s progress very closely.
According to Croft, Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies already knows the British driver exceptionally well, having played a key role in bringing him into the Ferrari Driver Academy during his previous spell in Maranello.
Croft explained that Red Bull sees Bearman as a potential option should Ferrari remain unable to promote him, suggesting that both the Milton Keynes-based team and the young Briton could benefit from such a move if no clear pathway opens at Ferrari.
Former Formula 1 drivers see a difficult decision ahead
Croft’s comments follow similar observations made by former Formula 1 drivers Martin Brundle and Jenson Button, both of whom believe Oliver Bearman cannot simply wait indefinitely for a Ferrari opportunity.
Martin Brundle pointed out that Charles Leclerc’s contract extension, combined with Lewis Hamilton’s intention to remain with Ferrari for several seasons, leaves Bearman without an obvious route into the Scuderia’s race team. In his view, the Ferrari academy graduate may eventually need to explore an alternative career path if he wants to continue progressing at the front of the Formula 1 grid.
Jenson Button shared a similar opinion, arguing that while Oliver Bearman should remain fully focused on delivering results with Haas, his management team would be wise to evaluate opportunities with other constructors. Waiting too long for a Maranello seat, Button suggested, carries the risk of limiting the young driver’s career prospects.
Could Red Bull become the perfect alternative?
For now, Oliver Bearman’s priority remains continuing his impressive performances with Haas and strengthening his credentials as one of Formula 1’s standout young drivers. However, if Ferrari continues to build its future around Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, the British driver could eventually face one of the biggest decisions of his career.
With Red Bull reportedly monitoring the situation and Laurent Mekies already familiar with Bearman’s abilities, the coming months could determine whether the Ferrari academy graduate eventually fulfils his childhood dream at Maranello—or whether another top Formula 1 team offers him a faster route to fighting at the front of the grid.
