Lewis Hamilton’s Struggles at Ferrari Raise Questions About Oliver Bearman’s Future

Lewis Hamilton endured a challenging first season at Ferrari in 2025, fueling speculation about a possible retirement or replacement by rising Haas star Oliver Bearman. The seven-time Formula 1 world champion, who joined Ferrari from Mercedes in February 2024 to fulfill his lifelong dream, hoped the move would reinvigorate his career after consecutive winless campaigns in 2022 and 2023.

However, Lewis Hamilton’s debut year in the iconic red car proved historically difficult. Not only did he fail to secure a single podium for the first time in his 19-year Formula 1 career, but his highest finishes were P4 at Imola, Austria, Silverstone, and the United States Grand Prix. Moreover, Lewis Hamilton recorded his lowest points tally since the current F1 scoring system was introduced in 2010, finishing sixth in the drivers’ championship with just 156 points. The season ended on a disappointing note as Hamilton exited Q1 in the final three rounds, highlighting ongoing struggles with Ferrari’s car.

Oliver Bearman’s Opportunity Hinges on Haas and 2026 Regulations

Amid Lewis Hamilton’s difficulties, many fans have suggested Ferrari consider promoting Oliver Bearman, the 20-year-old British talent currently driving for Haas. Ollie Bearman impressed in his first full F1 season, demonstrating maturity, adaptability, and consistent point-scoring performances. Ferrari originally loaned Ollie Bearman, a graduate of the Ferrari Driver Academy, to Haas on a two-year deal starting in 2025 to accelerate his development in Formula 1.

Motor Sport Magazine recently reported that Ollie Bearman’s move to Ferrari is likely inevitable, describing it as “just a question of timing.” Yet the young driver’s future at Maranello may hinge on Haas’ ability to adapt to the 2026 regulations. The introduction of a new chassis, revised aerodynamics, and active aerodynamics will challenge Haas and could affect Ollie Bearman’s trajectory. Analysts have described this as possibly Ollie Bearman’s “toughest challenge” yet to secure a Ferrari seat for the 2027 season.

Bearman’s Strong Track Record Puts Him in Ferrari’s Spotlight

Bearman has steadily impressed the Scuderia, both in his Ferrari Driver Academy tenure and his rookie F1 campaigns. He made a remarkable Formula 1 debut in Saudi Arabia in 2024, standing in for Carlos Sainz and finishing P7. He also scored points on his first race with Haas at the 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, finishing P10. During the 2025 season, Ollie Bearman continued to show his potential, scoring points in three of the opening four races and then demonstrating consistency later in the year by earning points in six of the final ten Grands Prix.

The Briton’s late-season form highlighted his ability to consistently finish within the top positions, never falling below P12 in nine of the final ten races. His five consecutive point-scoring finishes included a career-best P4 in Mexico City before retiring in Qatar. This resilience and adaptability under pressure have positioned him as a strong candidate to replace either Lewis Hamilton or even complement Charles Leclerc at Ferrari, depending on how the 2026 regulations reshape the grid.

Ultimately, while Lewis Hamilton continues to face the challenges of adapting to Ferrari’s technical package, Oliver Bearman’s performance at Haas, combined with the team’s approach to the new regulations, could dictate the next generation of drivers at Maranello. Ferrari fans will be watching closely, as 2026 may prove to be a defining season for both Hamilton’s legacy and Bearman’s future in the Scuderia.
