Scuderia Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finishes the 2023 Formula 1 Qatar Grand Prix race in fifth place and expresses his emotions on the team radio. What happened? The Monegasque driver opens up to his engineer and asks about the gap to the Mercedes W14 of George Russell.
The Mercedes driver, who returned to the track after the contact at the start with Lewis Hamilton (which led to Hamilton’s subsequent retirement), managed to climb up to fourth place. There will be a discussion between the two teammates. Something tells us that young George Russell’s apologies won’t be enough.
Back to Ferrari, the race engineer Xavi Marcos informs Charles Leclerc that the gap to George Russell was 4.9 seconds.
Charles Leclerc then asks him to check George Russell’s lap times. “Monitor his lap times. The car was doing well.” When he gets the answer regarding the gap to the McLaren, the Ferrari driver is in disbelief.
“33 seconds,” Marcos informs him. The Monegasque is speechless and after an “Oh my God,” he adds, “Okay, let’s keep pushing.”
Scuderia Ferrari thus wraps up a tough weekend in Losail. Carlos Sainz couldn’t compete due to a last-minute technical issue that the mechanics couldn’t resolve.
