The narrow and unique Baku circuit gave us a crazy qualifying session with a completely unexpected result for Ferrari fans. Charles Leclerc pulled off a real magic trick by securing his first pole position of the season, managing to edge out Verstappen by just 188 thousandths of a second.
Completing the second row are Perez (Red Bull) and Sainz (Ferrari), with Hamilton (Mercedes) and Alonso (Aston Martin) further back in the third row, while their respective teammates only managed to place on the outskirts of the top ten: Stroll (Aston Martin) in P9, and Russell (Mercedes) in P11.
Thanks to a tweet from Formula1 (Twitter), we can provide you with the provisional starting grid for the Azerbaijan GP, which will start on Sunday at 13:00 Italian time. In Baku, we have the (mis)fortune (depending on your point of view) of being able to witness the first weekend of 2023 affected by the revised format of Sprint Qualifying: tomorrow we will have a shorter qualifying session called shootout (10:30) and in the afternoon the sprint race (15:30), which will award the very first points of the weekend.
Why provisional? This is because the teams’ technicians could still encounter problems with the cars before tomorrow’s race, and if they deemed it necessary to replace a component subject to regulatory constraints, the Federation would be forced to demote the driver of said car by a few positions on the starting grid.
