Pascal Wehrlein as an alternative to Robert Kubica? Scuderia Ferrari is looking for the test driver who will replace Daniil Kvyat at the Maranello simulator and the Italian side is taking into consideration the possibility of offering Pascal Wehrlein this responsability for the 2019 season.
Daniil Kvyat has been working as a development driver for Scuderia Ferrari, but will drive for Scuderia Toro Rosso from 2019.
In September Mercedes announced it was ending Wehrlein’s Mercedes program contract to allow Wehrlein to test the market and it was clear that there were no Formula 1 openings for Wehrlein with the Mercedes teams. Kvyat’s return to Toro Rosso now opened up a spot for Ferrari’s development driver and, while Robert Kubica has been strongly linked with this position, Pascal Wehrlein has emerged a as a top candidate for Ferrari. The Italian side likes the idea of being able to welcome a driver of experience in Maranello who knows very well the Brackley simulator: Pascal knows also knows what are the “secrets” of the W09, so his arrival could bring added value that should extend beyond a simple drive.
And it is not certain that the position of Pascal Wehrlein must necessarily be an alternative to that of Robert Kubica, since there may be space for both. With Antonio Giovinazzi, Ferrari’s current third driver, on his way to Sauber alongside Kimi Raikkonen, a position as a reserve pilot for the Swiss team could also be available for 2019.
