After an unusual and uneventful weekend in Montreal at the 4.361-kilometre Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal, which started poorly in qualifying and ended with a double retirement in the race for Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, Scuderia Ferrari is now seeking redemption. To achieve this, the Maranello team will rely on the SF24, which, following its first major update package at the Imola circuit in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, will undergo significant revisions once again, this time in the next round of the 2024 Formula 1 championship, the Spanish Grand Prix, which is scheduled to take place at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona.
The evolution of the SF-24 single-seater continues
This move aims to keep pace with Red Bull and, especially, McLaren, which has surged ahead since Miami, with the MCL-38 currently setting the performance benchmark.
According to what has been recently reported by the Italian website Formu1a.uno, the Maranello team will debut the second package, initially planned for Silverstone, at the upcoming Barcelona event.
Initially, only a new floor was anticipated, but the Maranello team, coordinated by Italian aerodynamicist and technical director Enrico Cardile, has managed to finalize much of the new aerodynamic package. The SF-24 will see significant changes to the rear, particularly in the tray and diffuser areas, along with some minor adjustments to the flow diverters.
“Barcelona is a good mix of corners and is tough on the tires,” said team principal Frederic Vasseur a few days after the Monaco victory, “but I don’t think the performance levels will be drastically different from the first eight Grands Prix.”
“When you bring an update, you also need to evaluate how it can change the setup, potentially causing you to lose something on that side. You then need to consider when to bring them, if there’s a Sprint Race, if the circuit is suitable, and if you can have the spare parts ready in time. With the budget cap, there are many more variables to consider.” – the French manager pointed out.
