Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen will not face any Formula 1 penalties despite installing brand-new power unit elements in view of the next round of the 2023 Formula 1 championship, the Austrian Grand Prix.
Considering the power-hungry nature of the 4.318-kilometre Red Bull Ring track in Spielberg, teams often opt for fresh components to maximize power. Both Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari and Max Verstappen’s Red Bull teams made this choice, as confirmed ahead of the first free practice session, which took place on Friday.
Charles Leclerc, alongside teammate Carlos Sainz, equipped their SF-23 with a new Turbocharger, MGU-H, and exhaust system. However, these changes will not result in a grid penalty since all the new parts fall within the allowed allocation.
Max Verstappen, aiming for his fifth consecutive victory this weekend, installed a new Control Electronics and Energy Store, using the second set of these PU parts.
Other drivers who opted for new parts include both Alfa Romeo and Haas drivers, who installed new Internal Combustion Engines, Turbos, and exhaust systems, while Haas’ Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg each have a new MGU-H component. In addition, both AlphaTauri drivers have a fresh Energy Store, while Yuki Tsunoda also received new Control Electronics. Valtteri Bottas likewise is using a new set of Control Electronics.
