If Lewis Hamilton (36) crowns himself world champion in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, it would be the eighth title for the Briton. Nobody would have more and this would make the Mercedes driver the sole record holder. He currently shares the record with former Scuderia Ferrari driver Michael Schumacher, who, like Hamilton, won a total of seven titles. But would that really make Hamilton the greatest of all time?
In a recent interview for German tabloid newspaper BILD, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff (49) shares his thoughts before the big season finale!
BILD: Mr. Wolff, if Lewis Hamilton will be world champion tomorrow, he would be the sole record holder with eight titles ahead of Michael Schumacher. Would he be the greatest of all time?
Toto Wolff: No one will ever be greater than Schumi. Even if the statistics saw Lewis up front. But Michael shaped a generation like no other, he is iconic. You cannot make comparisons across generations. Lewis is the greatest of his generation.”
Why is Max Verstappen not going to be world champion tomorrow?
Toto Wolff: “I do not know that. Max and Lewis both deserved it.”
Is it that easy in sports?
Toto Wolff: “Yes. Both drivers had their problems during the season. Max with accidents through no fault of his own, like in Hungary, us with the engine. But now we have real speed.”
Many fear an accident tomorrow between the two. That would make Verstappen world champion. How big is your fear of it?
Toto Wolff: “That is unpredictable. But it is good that, after we have seen situations like this over and over again in the past races, the race management has drawn attention to the fact that an intentional accident will not be tolerated.”
Is Verstappen driving too recklessly?
Toto Wolff: “It’s extremely tough racing. You have to know if you are going into maneuvers like that, even though you know you won’t be able to get around the corner. But he’s got away with that so far. Then it is of course difficult for him to accept that this will not work if one is punished for it at some point.”
