Four races in a month, for Ferrari the summer tour begins with the goal of to reopening the battle for the World Championship title by reversing the trend of the last few race weekends. For the Maranello team the target is clear: winning more than two months after the triumph in Australia. We start from Silverstone this weekend (then Austria, France and Hungary), a severe track with fast corners where horsepower and tire handling skills count.
The tires are subjected to heavy stress, especially those on the left side. Built on an old military airport, the circuit is a high speed one, which means that aerodynamic efficiency is a key feature for winning. Ferrari has worked very hard to reduce the drag of its F1-75 car and the updates introduced in Barcelona have given some positive feedback. Red Bull was still ahead in terms of efficiency, but lately the gaps have narrowed.
Even at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, whene Carlos Sainz came very close to taking his first Formula 1 victory, but eventually had to settle for second place after not being able to overtake Max Verstappen. And if he had started in front of the Dutchman he would have had a great opportunity to win the race, as admitted even by the World Championship leader, who now has a 49-point advantage over Charles Leclerc ahead of the British Grand Prix.
As reported by corriere.it, Scuderia Ferrari will not bring major updates to Silverstone. Instead there will be adaptations to the circuit. One of these is the unloaded rear wing, used only by Charles in the Canadian GP.
This time Carlos Sainz will have it too, as the Spaniard will hit the track with the third power unit of the season after changing it in Montreal. The abundance of fresh engines in the Charles Leclerc garage – after the penalty taken in Canada – can play an important role in the comeback operation: because after Silverstone we will go to Austria, another place sensitive to power also due to the altitude. Then there is the human factor: Charles Leclerc loves the British track, last year he was in the lead up to two laps from the end and even in the very poor 2020 Ferrari car he managed to get on the podium.

The Ferrari F1-75 was competitive everywhere, but not as concrete in scoring points especially due to lack of reliability. Will Ferrari be competitive this time too? On paper there are no reasons not to think so, but it will also depend on the extent of Red Bull’s progress. There is expectation for the development of the blue team: it is known that the Milton Keynes team is currently working on a big package to make the car lose weight by another 5 kg, which also means bringing a new floor for a gain of around 3-4 tenths. But it is possible that such an important update will be approved only after the summer, also serving as a basis for the 2023 project. And there is also expectation for the Mercedes updates: Toto Wolff spoke of “improvements” on the way. There are those who speak of a revolution, that is, of a progressive return to the original configuration that debuted in February in the Barcelona tests after the flop of the alternative concept presented in Bahrain.
