Scuderia Ferrari fans know it well: since the 2007 Formula 1 season, the Maranello team has not won a Drivers’ Championship, and since 2008 a Constructors’ Championship. The Italian side has come close several times, but something has always been missing to clinch the trophies that the Tifosi are still waiting for. In contrast, the last 15 years have been dominated by just two teams, Mercedes and Red Bull, who have established eras of dominance and broken record after record. It’s worth pointing out that Christian Horner and Toto Wolff have been in charge of Red Bull and Mercedes during all this time, as opposed to what was seen at Ferrari, with several team principals being replaced during the last decade.
In an interview on the Business for Sport podcast, German and Finnish entrepreneur and former professional racing driver Nico Rosberg explained one of the reasons why Scuderia Ferrari has struggled in recent years, and what has made Mercedes and Red Bull so successful: “The keys to a team’s success are two-fold: leadership, which is essential not only at the top but also for managing various departments, and staff loyalty. One of the strengths of Mercedes is that there are people who have been there for 15 years, and this ensures continuity. I can’t specifically say names, but the same happens at Red Bull. At Ferrari, however, there is a great turnover of personnel, so there is a lack of stability.” – concluded Nico Rosberg, who won the Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship in 2016 with Mercedes.
