New kerbs and walls adjusted at Jeddah Street circuit to improve safety and visibility. Jeddah reveals safety changes to circuit for 2023 event.

The Saudi Arabian Grand Prix organisers have confirmed some small changes to the Jeddah Corniche Circuit in view of the 2023 Formula 1 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, which is scheduled to take place on March 19.

In 2022, the sport returned to a slightly revised version of the 6.174 km motor racing circuit built in the Red Sea port city of Jeddah, after several modifications were done following feedback received in the inaugural Formula 1 race, which took place at the end of 2021. These changes were made with the goal of improving sight lines in key section of the track around the 6.175 km facility as well as the width of the circuit’s last turn.

However, even more improvements for driver sight lines and safety have been confirmed at the high-speed venue, which will host its third Formula 1 event next season.

‘Rumble Lines’ have been added at Turns 3, 14, 19, 20 and 21, while beveled kerbs have been installed in place of steel ones at Corners 4, 8, 10, 11, 17 and 23.

In order to further improve driver sightlines, the fence walls which are located on the left and right sides at Turns 14 and 20 have been moved back, and rumble lines have been installed. At the same time, the walls have also been pushed back at Turns 8 and 10 where visibility should now be a lot better.

Other modifications have targeted the high-speed Turns 22 and 23 complex where the ‘S’ shape has been squeezed as a result of an adjustment of the fence at T23, and where a beveled kerb has been installed. This means that in 2023, Formula 1 cars will go through this section with a speed lower by about 50 km/h as compared to the previous years.

“The previous two races here in Jeddah have already confirmed the JCC as the world’s fastest and most exciting street circuit and these new developments will only add to the spectacle that fans can expect to see next March when F1 returns to our city,” explained Saudi Motorsport Company Chief Executive Martin Whitaker – “It is vital for any circuit to listen and learn from those racing on it and use their feedback to grow and improve at all times. We are confident these changes will lead to even faster, more exciting and – crucially – safe racing and we can’t wait to see the world’s greatest drivers battle it out here under the lights again in 2023.” – the chief executive of the event’s promoter concluded.
