Formula One returs next weekend with the Russian Grand Prix at Sochi Autodrom, but for Scuderia Ferrari the focus is mainly on the new regulatory era of the sport which is just around the corner and the historic Maranello team is aiming for only one result next season: to be able to win again. Or at least have a decent chance of winning. This explains why almost all of the efforts made by the Prancing Horse technicians are projected towards the 2022 Formula One championship, with the drivers of the Red team spending 90% of the time in the simulator studying the future car.
The development of the 2022 car is progressing at an important pace. At this stage, the men from Maranello are finalizing the details before the entire concept of the car is frozen. Therefore the geometries, the chassis, the suspension, the cooling system and of course every detail is being examined at an advanced stage. When everything is ready Ferrari will start with the production phase and then devote itself totally to the aerodynamics of F1.
As a starter of the 2.0 hybrid era, the latest version of the power unit will be introduced during the next rounds of the current championship. Apart from the updates relating to lubricants and fuel, the work focused mainly on the hybrid part of the engine, the real weak point of the 065/6, implementing new technological systems. In addition to a substantial increase in the maximum power of the engine, therefore, the power unit will ensure a higher level of efficiency.
The effects of this improvement will undoubtedly be seen on the push lap in qualifying, but they will be even more important in the economy of the race. To sum up, in addition to maximizing the energy produced by the MGU-K motor generator over a lap, there will be the use of the overboost K2, K1 and K1Plus, in the moments of defense / attack and when the pace must necessarily increase in the phases that precede and follow tire changes.
The desire to test the new engine on the track after months of work is very big. In addition to the leap in performance, the aim is to achieve maximum product certification in view of the next world championship, where the word defeat will certainly not be included in the Ferrari vocabulary. However, there is likely to be a slight delay on the roadmap and the new specification planned for Turkey could be postponed to subsequent rounds.
In addition to the very important reliability study, in fact, certain logistical and bureaucratic factors in the state of things are accentuating the delay. Although the Italian engineers need to test the new PU on the track, therefore, every little detail must be taken care of in the smallest details to achieve the set goal: to reduce the engine gap on the opponents which is currently quantified at about 20hp.
