Italian GP – Norris leads, but Leclerc, Hamilton, and Verstappen hint at a fiery Saturday
Friday at the Italian Grand Prix sent a clear message: McLaren will not have an easy time at Monza. Lando Norris topped the FP2 timesheets, but his margin over the first challenger, Charles Leclerc, was minimal—just 83 thousandths of a second. Behind them, less than two tenths off, was Lewis Hamilton, confirming a Ferrari ready to play its cards. In the background, as always, looms Max Verstappen, sixth but never too far away.
Lando Norris fast, but not untouchable
The British McLaren driver made the most of a qualifying simulation, delivering a near-perfect lap. But the data tells a different story: the MCL39 seems to carry more downforce than Ferrari and Red Bull. This advantage was clear in sector 2, including the second chicane and the Lesmo curves, where Norris made the difference.
Elsewhere, rivals made their presence felt. In sector 1, Charles Leclerc was the fastest of all, while on Monza’s extremely long sector 3 straight, Lando Norris gained only one hundredth of a second over the Monegasque. Even Verstappen, finishing the day in sixth, kept a competitive pace throughout every section, never falling too far behind.
Ferrari and Red Bull on the hunt
The Ferrari SF-25 proved effective with low downforce, maximizing power on the straights. Charles Leclerc, energized by the Monza crowd, seems ready to fight for pole, while Lewis Hamilton has shown he has found strong car balance. Max Verstappen, despite a quiet start, remains the most dangerous rival: the world champion knows exactly how to overturn the hierarchy when it really counts.
With these conditions, Saturday qualifying at Monza promises sparks: McLaren holds a slight edge on the stopwatch, but Ferrari and Red Bull are ready to disrupt the plans of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.
