Monza 2025: the fastest race in Formula 1 history
A new record has arrived at Monza. After Max Verstappen’s stunning qualifying lap, where he beat Lewis Hamilton’s 2020 benchmark time of 1:18.792 by 95 thousandths of a second, the Dutch driver went on to set another milestone in Formula 1.
The 2025 Italian Grand Prix is now officially the shortest and fastest race ever in the history of Formula 1. The reigning Red Bull world champion completed the 53 laps in just 1h 13m 24.325s at an average speed of 250 km/h, breaking the previous record that had stood since 2003, also at Monza. Back then, Michael Schumacher and Ferrari finished the race in 1h 14m 19.838s with an average speed of 247.585 km/h.
The race was short and intense, lasting just over 70 minutes, but it offered little excitement beyond the opening laps. One wonders what Stefano Domenicali might think of this result, especially since only a few days ago he had expressed the desire to shorten the length of Grands Prix to better suit today’s audience, particularly younger fans. But is this really the ultimate solution to Formula 1’s challenges?
