All around the world, things are shutting down. Formula 1 is no different. Apart from the Monaco organisers who say the preparation for the race in the famous streets will continue as normal.
In the principality, they do everything to let the GP continue anyway. When the Grands Prix of Bahrain and Vietnam were postponed, it was said that we would start again at the end of May, but everyone already assumes that we will only start in Azerbaijan. Monaco does not know anything yet.
Monaco wants to continue
The Grand Prix on the street circuit would take place on May 24 and as long as no postponement has been confirmed by Formula 1, Monaco wants to continue to do everything to prepare the circuit on time. “This work should continue as usual, as the race if it continues, should be able to take place under ideal conditions,” said Marie-Pierre Gramaglia, counsel for the responsible ministry in a statement.
At the same time, Formula 1 official tyre supplier Pirelli has announced that the softest tyre compounds will be used in Monaco, if the race will actually take place. The sporting landscape has been heavily disrupted by the outbreak and spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus, with Formula 1’s opening quartet of events cancelled or postponed.
It is thought improbable that this is a realistic objective though track build is continuing in spite of restrictions brought in by officials in Principality.
Pirelli will once more bring the C3, C4 and C5 tyres to the event, the softest three compounds from its usual range of five.
Each driver will have 13 sets of tyres available for the duration of the weekend and they are permitted free choice from the three nominated compounds for 10 of the sets.
