Lewis Hamilton takes a close look at Kimi Antonelli’s Mercedes after Monaco Grand Prix defeat
The Monaco Grand Prix may have ended with Lewis Hamilton standing on the podium for Ferrari, but the seven-time Formula 1 world champion was clearly still searching for answers after the chequered flag fell.
One of the most intriguing images to emerge from the Principality shows the Briton carefully examining the rear section of Kimi Antonelli’s Mercedes W17 shortly after the race. The Italian driver had just secured a dominant victory on the streets of Monte Carlo, finishing ahead of Lewis Hamilton and further strengthening his position at the top of the championship standings.
While post-race car inspections between drivers are nothing unusual in Formula 1, the image perfectly captures the competitive mindset that has defined Lewis Hamilton throughout his career. Even after securing another strong result for Ferrari, the British driver appeared eager to understand what allowed Mercedes to maintain an advantage during one of the most important weekends of the season.
Mercedes sets the benchmark in Monaco
Kimi Antonelli’s victory was built on a near-perfect performance. The young Mercedes driver converted pole position into victory and controlled the race from start to finish despite the interruptions caused by the late red flag and subsequent standing restart.
Throughout the weekend, the Mercedes W17 looked exceptionally strong. The car displayed impressive traction, strong mechanical grip and excellent tyre management around the narrow Monaco circuit, all crucial factors on a track where overtaking opportunities are virtually non-existent.
Lewis Hamilton himself acknowledged after the race that Ferrari still has work to do if it wants to consistently challenge Mercedes. Although the Ferrari SF-26 has shown significant progress compared to its predecessor, the Maranello team continues to search for additional performance, particularly in terms of aerodynamic efficiency and overall downforce.
The sight of Lewis Hamilton studying the Mercedes machine therefore comes as little surprise. Formula 1 drivers are constantly analysing rivals, searching for even the smallest clues that could explain a performance advantage.
A sign of Hamilton’s relentless approach
Throughout his career, Lewis Hamilton has earned a reputation not only for his speed behind the wheel but also for his technical curiosity. Engineers who have worked with him often praise his ability to identify strengths and weaknesses in both his own car and those of rival teams. The Monaco image offers another example of that mindset. Rather than simply celebrating a second consecutive runner-up finish, Lewis Hamilton appeared focused on understanding where Ferrari can improve.
That attitude has played an important role in his recent resurgence. After a challenging first season with Ferrari, the British driver has become increasingly competitive in 2026, collecting multiple podiums and climbing to second place in the drivers’ championship.
His recent performances have also coincided with several technical changes behind the scenes, including setup refinements and modifications designed to make the SF-26 better suited to his driving style.
Ferrari chasing the next step
Although Monaco delivered another encouraging result for Ferrari, the race also highlighted the challenge facing the Italian team. Kimi Antonelli’s Mercedes remained just out of reach, particularly during race conditions.
Charles Leclerc’s retirement following his brake-related incident further complicated Ferrari’s weekend, leaving the Briton as the team’s sole representative at the front.
With Spain next on the Formula 1 calendar and additional upgrades expected in the coming races, Ferrari will be hoping to reduce the performance gap. The battle at the front of the championship remains intense, and every technical detail could make a difference.
For now, however, one image from Monaco tells an interesting story. While Kimi Antonelli celebrated another impressive victory, Lewis Hamilton was already studying the car that beat him, searching for the secrets that could help Ferrari take the next step forward.
It highlights that in Formula 1, the learning process never stops. Even after more than 20 years in the sport, Lewis Hamilton remains as determined as ever to find every possible advantage in the pursuit of victory.
