Watch: Michael Schumacher takes his fifth win in Monte Carlo! | 2001 Monaco GP. Michael celebrates victory at the Monaco Grand Prix, in 2001.

The 2001 Monaco Grand Prix was held at the Circuit de Monaco on 27 May 2001 and was the seventh race of the 2001 Formula One season. Scuderia Ferrari’s German driver Michael Schumacher won the race and up to date no other Ferrari driver has managed to score a victory on the city streets of Monte Carlo.

David Coulthard, who started from pole position for McLaren-Mercedes, stalled on the formation lap leading, giving Michael Schumacher the opportunity to immediately take the lead, which made the German’s task much easier, as Michael admitted at the end of the race:

“I was asked why I didn’t jump on the podium. Honestly, I don’t feel that emotional because it has been a very straightforward win. It wasn’t anything exceptional, nothing exceptionally happened through the race, which could make you emotional. It’s always nice to win in Monte Carlo. It’s always special, but it was straightforward. It was tiring to some degree. The only thing you think about is reliability. It is very easy to make mistakes here. It is a hard circuit and although it was an easy drive, it was still hard.”

Rubens Barrichello completed the perfect weekend for Scuderia Ferrari by finishing second, as the Maranello team was never really challenged after David Coulthard disappeared and his team-mate Mika Hakkinen couldn’t keep up in the early laps of the 2001 Monaco Grand Prix. As a consequence of the race, Michael Schumacher extended his lead in the Driver’s Championship to 12 points over David Coulthard after seven round of the F1 season. In the Constructors’ Championship, Scuderia Ferrari extended their lead over McLaren to 32 points.
