After offering some previews yesterday, the FIA has just officially announced the much-discussed 2026 technical regulations, with Formula 1 set to undergo a true technological revolution, similar to 2022.
Formula 1 launches into the future
There are many changes compared to the current regulatory cycle, starting with the introduction of active aerodynamics, a 30kg weight reduction, with cars being significantly more agile, shorter, and narrower than the current ones. This will result in a 30% reduction in downforce, benefiting the drag resistance, which will decrease by 55%.
The real big innovation is the manual override mode, a system that will effectively replace the DRS effect, allowing following cars to have more electric power compared to the leading drivers.
Speaking about the new era that Formula 1 is about to enter, Mohammed Ben Sulayem identified the two fundamental pillars of the new regulations: “After publishing the 2026 power unit regulations, we took the opportunity to redefine the chassis regulations to match the energy requirements of the new power units.” – the Emirati former rally driver and current president of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile explained.
“By collaborating with our Formula 1 partners and with the assistance of the 10 teams in this sport and all our stakeholders, this is a unique review that will ensure our premier championship is even more relevant to what is happening in the world.” – he added.
“The main characteristics of the 2026 F1 Regulations are advanced and sustainable technology and safety. Our goal, together with Formula 1, was to produce a car suitable for the future of this sport’s elite category. We believe we have achieved this goal.”
Former Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali also echoed the words of the Emirati, expressing enthusiasm for the technical challenge that all of Formula 1 will face in just over a year: “These regulations mark an important moment for the future of our sport. We expect a new generation of cars and power units, aiming to provide our fans with closer and more exciting races.”

“The new hybrid power unit with sustainable fuel represents a huge opportunity for the global automotive industry. The reduction in fuel has the potential to be used by cars worldwide and drastically reduce emissions. Its potential is one of the main reasons why in 2026 we will have a record number of engine suppliers in Formula 1. We enter this new regulatory cycle with the sport in the strongest position it has ever been. I am confident that the work done by the FIA to create these regulations will further strengthen the position of this sport worldwide.” – the Italian manager and the current CEO of Formula One Group concluded.
