Charles Leclerc’s decision to extend his stay with Ferrari has generated plenty of discussion throughout the Formula 1 paddock, and former World Champion Mika Häkkinen believes the Monegasque driver has chosen the right path for his future.
Ferrari confirmed Charles Leclerc’s contract extension ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix, ending any speculation about his long-term plans and reinforcing the team’s commitment to building around one of the fastest drivers on the grid. While some observers questioned whether a move elsewhere could eventually improve his chances of winning a world championship, Mika Häkkinen sees significant value in continuity.
The two-time Formula 1 World Champion spoke positively about both Charles Leclerc and Ferrari, expressing confidence that the partnership still has the potential to deliver success.
“I think Charles is a great personality. He’s a great racing driver, he’s in a good team and going through for the future, I’m confident he can [succeed],” Mika Häkkinen said.
However, the Finn also highlighted what he considers one of the most important principles in a driver’s career: “But if you want to be a winner, if you want to win a world championship, keep your life simple. Don’t make it too complicated!”
His comments reflect a philosophy that has often proven true in Formula 1. Many championship-winning partnerships have been built over time rather than through constant changes. Drivers, engineers and team leaders frequently need several seasons together before reaching their full potential as a group.
Mika Häkkinen pointed out that drivers can sometimes become frustrated when success does not arrive quickly enough: “What happens very often for drivers who have been with a team two, three years and there’s no success, they are still in a feeling that they are the best; that the problem is not you, it’s about the team.”
For Charles Leclerc, that observation is particularly relevant. Since joining Ferrari, he has delivered race wins, pole positions and standout performances, but the ultimate goal of winning a Formula 1 World Championship has remained out of reach. Despite the inevitable frustrations, he has continued to place his trust in Ferrari’s long-term project.
Mika Häkkinen believes that trust can be rewarded, especially when a driver avoids the temptation to move repeatedly between teams: “When the drivers start changing teams too often, you never can find the stability. People don’t learn to understand who you really are, what is required, what kind of car is required for this talented driver to really perform at 100%.” – the former McLaren driver pointed out.
He continued:
“Then they start swapping different teams and nobody ever learns who you really are.”
The point is particularly interesting in the modern era of Formula 1, where the relationship between driver and team has become increasingly complex. Success depends not only on raw speed but also on the ability of engineers to tailor a car around a driver’s preferences, strengths and driving style. That process can take years to perfect.
Ferrari’s commitment to Charles Leclerc suggests that Maranello believes it understands exactly what its lead driver needs. Likewise, the Monegasque’s decision to stay indicates that he still believes Ferrari can provide him with a championship-winning package in the future.
As Formula 1 prepares for major regulatory changes in the coming years, stability may become an even more valuable asset. Teams will be developing entirely new cars and power units, making continuity between drivers and engineers increasingly important.
For Mika Häkkinen, the equation is simple. Charles Leclerc possesses the talent required to become a world champion, Ferrari remains one of the sport’s most ambitious teams, and maintaining a stable environment may ultimately offer a better chance of success than constantly searching for opportunities elsewhere.
