Mick Schumacher, son of seven-time Formula One World Champion and Scuderia Ferrari legend Michael Schumacher, is currently racing in the European Formula 3 Championship for the 2017 season, after the 18-year old German racing driver previously entered the Italian F4 Championship and finished runner-up in both championships to Joey Mawson and Marcos Siebert respectively.
The 2017 FIA Formula 3 European Championship is a multi-event motor racing championship for single-seat open wheel formula racing cars that is held across Europe. The championship features drivers competing in two-litre Formula Three racing cars which conform to the technical regulations, or formula, for the championship.
Mick Schumacher is racing for Prema Powerteam, the defending winner of the 2016 teams’ championship, alongside Maximilian Gunther, China Guanyu Zhou and Callum Ilott. However, the young driver’s first experience in the Formula 3 Championship is not a positive one, as things are not looking good for Mick Schumacher after the first half of the season. Mick is currently outside the top ten in the Drivers Standings, with only 55 points, despite the fact that his teammate Maximilian Gunther is leading the championship with 236 points after the first 15 races, having a 34-point advantage over second place Joel Eriksson (Motopark). However, it’s worth pointing out the fact that 20-year-old Gunther is currently in his third FIA Formula 3 European Championship season.
Mick Schumacher’s best result this year is a third place finish in the second race at Monza, which was held on April 29 and which up to date remains his only podium finish in the Formula 3 Championship. The most recent round of the competition took place at the 2.3 kilometres long street circuit in Nuremberg and was won by Jehan Daruvala (Carlin), the 18-year-old Indian, who is backed by the Force India Formula 1 team. He finished ahead of Maximilian Gunther (Prema Powerteam) and Lando Norris (Carlin), as Mick Schumacher had to retire after his car came to a halt due to a contact with Pedro Piquet (Van Amersfoort Racing) on lap five.
