Ferrari junior Mick Schumacher is one of the main candidates to replace four-time Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel at Aston Martin in the 2023 Formula One season, according to F1 journalist Sergio Rodríguez and also F1 expert Dieter Rencken, who has held full FIA Formula 1 media accreditation since 2000
A combination of Mick Schumacher’s recent strong form and his links to legendary father Michael make the German an ideal candidate for a place on the Formula 1 grid with Aston Martin in 2023: “Mick has upped his game recently, and of course, he’s got the Schumacher name, which is very, very valuable for a car company seeking some form of prestige,” Dieter Rencken confirmed – “I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re talking to Mick.”
Mick Schumacher made his Formula 1 debut with Haas last season as part to his status as a member of Ferrari’s Driver Academy, with the Maranello team able to nominate a driver for a race seat at Haas, given the close links between the American team and Ferrari. The Italian side provides Haas with its engine and in return their arrangement gives the Maranello team the possibility to evaluate its young drivers and understand if they are suitable for a promotion to a race seat at Ferrari in the future.
Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz currently have a contract with Ferrari for the next two years, which means no opening will emerge at Scuderia Ferrari in the near future. At the same time, by joining Aston Martin for 2023, Mick Schumacher would have to leave the Ferrari Driver Academy and therefore break all ties with the Italian side:
“I don’t think Mick will stay on with Haas unless Ferrari decided to retain Mick, and at this stage, that’s far from certain,” Dieter Rencken added – “There are increasing questions as to whether it’s in the best interests of Ferrari to retain Mick in the academy, because normally those drivers end up [at Ferrari], and there are doubts that Mick will end up there in the near future, if at all. If that’s the case, why retain them in the academy? Therefore, why would Haas then keep on the driver when Ferrari would probably nominate somebody else for next year? [Haas] do have Kevin Magnussen under contract [for 2023], so I think that Mick is potentially a free agent next year.”

Haas boss Guenther Steiner was recently asked about Mick Schumacher’s future with the American team, especially after the latest positive performances at Silverstone and the Red Bull Ring and admitted there was nothing certain for now: “What do [the two points finishes] do for his future? I don’t really know yet; it’s early to talk about the future. We haven’t decided on the drivers and we never did before the summer break, as you well know. We will decide after the summer break and see, but I don’t know what else he’s up to.” – the Haas Team Principal explained.
During the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend, Sergio Rodríguez also confirmed that “I’ve been told Mick won’t renew his contract with Ferrari’s Driver Academy at the end of the year and is the first choice to be in Aston Martin next year! Ricciardo and Alonso are DISCARDED Hülkenberg is the second option for the moment” – he posted on social media on Saturday.
