Scuderia Ferrari legend Michael Schumacher survived his 2013 terrible skiing accident, but is still fighting the consequences of that moment, FIA president Jean Todt has said.
Michael was skiing in the French Alps eight years ago when he suffered a devastating head injury and had to be air-lifted to a hospital in Grenoble. It is widely believed – yet has never been publicly confirmed – that the former Ferrari driver is permanently brain damaged due to the incident from 2013.
“I have spent a lot of time with Corinna since Michael had his serious skiing accident” Jean Todt, who was Michael Schumacher’s team boss at the Maranello team, said in a recent interview for German newspaper Bild – “She is a great woman and leads the family,” he added, referring again to 52-year-old Schumacher’s wife. She didn’t expect that. It happened suddenly and she had no choice.” – he added.
The current President of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile has remained one of the very few people to stay in close contact with Michael’s family, and therefore has knowledge of the German’s precise health condition, as the former Ferrari boss continued: “Thanks to the work of his doctors and the cooperation of Corinna, who wanted Michael to survive, he did survive – but with consequences. At the moment he fights the consequences. We hope that things will slowly but surely improve” – Jean Todt added.
At the same time, Jean Todt confirmed that he constantly visits the Schumacher family and completely supports the Formula 1 career of Michael’s son Mick, who races for Haas in the 2021 F1 season and is also part of the Ferrari Driver Academy: “Mick is one of those people who always has a special place in my heart and that of my wife Michelle” – the Frenchman concluded.
