Former Formula 1 driver and Scuderia Ferrari legend Michael Schumacher will receive the North Rhine-Westphalia State Award, the state’s highest award, at Motorworld Cologne next month for his impeccable performances and outstanding achievements in motorsports.
Michael Schumacher is considered the greatest Formula 1 driver of all time by many fans. His seven-world titles for Scuderia Ferrari and Benetton, that he won during his amazing carrer, also scoring 91 race victories, brought him to the zenith of Formula 1. The German racing legend is also credited for the dominance of Scudeia Ferrari in the early 2000s as well as creating a solid base for Mercedes one decade ago. Michael Schumacher’s greatness was not only related to his driving skills but also because of his involvement in the engineering side and the way he was able to lead Ferrari, joining the team at a very difficult time in its history and bringing it back at the top.
Now, almost ten years after he left the sport, Michael Schumacher has been awarded the state prize of North-Rhine-Westphalia. The ceremony took place on Monday and was organized by Motorsport Cologne.
“Michael Schumacher’s work as an athlete and as a supporter of a good cause radiates far beyond the borders of his homeland of North Rhine-Westphalia,” said NRW Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst.
Despite the fact that the former Ferrari driver has been been away from the public eye since 2013, due to a skiing accident, he “never lost his feet on the ground and always kept an eye on his fellow human beings,” explained Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst.

The laudation was held by former Ferrari boss Jean Todt, who worked alongside Michael Schumacher at the Maranello team, while his wife Corrina Schumacher and children Gina and Mick Schumacher accepted the award.
The North Rhine-Westphalia State Award is a prize for outstanding cultural or scientific achievements or outstanding achievements in other areas of life. The award winners should be personalities who are connected to the state of North Rhine-Westphalia through their career or work. The prize is usually awarded annually. The award winners are selected by a panel of up to seven people appointed by the state’s prime minister.
