Just days before New Year’s 2014, on December 29, 2013, the motorsport world was shaken by devastating news from Méribel, a resort in the French Alps: seven-time Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher suffered a severe skiing accident, hitting his head on a rock and sustaining critical injuries. Rushed to the hospital in Grenoble and placed in a medically induced coma, the former Ferrari driver’s condition remained uncertain for years. After being transferred to Switzerland, he began rehabilitation first at a private clinic and later at Lausanne Hospital, before eventually returning home to his villa in Gland.

For twelve years, Schumacher’s family has maintained absolute discretion regarding his health, revealing nothing to the media or to anyone seeking updates, even when faced with pressure or attempts at blackmail. Only a select few, including former Team Principal Jean Todt, have had the chance to meet him, always respecting the family’s wishes. Even in the Netflix documentary on his life, “Michael,” his wife Corinna conveyed the situation with poignant clarity: “I miss Michael every day, and I am not the only one. The whole family misses him, the children, his father, everyone around him. Even though he is here, he is no longer the same, but he is here.”
The foundation
During this long and difficult period, the Schumacher family created the Keep Fighting Foundation, a non-profit initiative that, under the name of the seven-time world champion, spreads the message of never giving up in the face of life’s toughest challenges. The foundation also carries out charitable projects worldwide, supported by Michael Schumacher’s numerous fans. Sabine Kehm, Schumacher’s spokesperson, explained: “The goal of the Keep Fighting initiative is to spread the message that giving up is not an option, and this goes beyond motorsport. In this way, we try to transform a terrible event that affected the Schumacher family into something positive. We want to send a message of encouragement to all those willing to embrace it. Keep Fighting is about courage, hope, and believing in yourself. We want to give back the positive energy the Schumacher family has received from so many people around the world. We want to spread a positive spirit.”
As the F1 community reflects on this anniversary, the legacy of Michael Schumacher continues to transcend his records on the track. While his physical presence remains shielded from the public eye, his spirit of resilience remains a beacon for millions. The “Keep Fighting” mantra has become more than just a slogan; it is a testament to a man who redefined the limits of speed and a family that redefined the limits of strength.
