Mercedes vs. Ferrari: War of words escalates before the 2026 Silverstone race. Lewis Hamilton revives Mercedes power unit controversy before Silverstone.

When the engines fall silent, the Formula 1 paddock often becomes the stage for an equally intense battle of words. Fortunately, the on-track action returns in just a couple of days as the championship heads to Silverstone for the ninth round of the 2026 season. The iconic British Grand Prix, featuring the Sprint format, promises not only exciting racing but also another chapter in the growing rivalry between Mercedes and Ferrari.

Over the past few days, the two manufacturers have exchanged subtle but unmistakable jabs through the media. It is worth remembering that Mercedes has dominated the season so far, winning seven of the first eight Grands Prix. The only exception came in Barcelona, where Ferrari claimed a memorable victory.

Despite Mercedes’ commanding position, Team Principal Toto Wolff has continued to direct attention toward Maranello. As discussed in previous analyses, the Austrian executive frequently comments on Ferrari’s progress even while his own team leads the championship, ensuring that the Scuderia remains part of the conversation.

Recently, Toto Wolff expressed surprise at the pace of Ferrari’s development programme, pointing out that the SF-26 continues to receive significant upgrades while Mercedes has adopted a more conservative approach, introducing smaller update packages less frequently.

Many observers viewed those remarks as a calculated piece of psychological gamesmanship rather than genuine concern. Under Formula 1’s budget cap and the Aerodynamic Testing Restrictions (ATR), every team is free to choose its own development strategy. Ferrari, after all, is chasing the championship leaders, while Mercedes currently occupies the benchmark position. It is therefore perfectly logical that the Scuderia would pursue a more aggressive upgrade programme than a team already sitting at the top.

Lewis Hamilton reignites the Mercedes power unit debate

The discussion took another interesting turn when Lewis Hamilton addressed Ferrari’s disappointing performance at the Austrian Grand Prix. Following his fifth-place finish—coming just one race after his victory in Barcelona—the seven-time World Champion openly questioned the true performance level of the Mercedes power unit.

The Spielberg weekend proved frustrating for Ferrari. While Lewis Hamilton finished fifth, Charles Leclerc endured another difficult race and crossed the line in eighth place, extending a challenging period for the Monegasque driver.

Mercedes’ W17 also entered the ADUO development system this season without being classified as the outright benchmark among Formula 1’s turbo-hybrid power units. That outcome surprised many paddock insiders and fuelled speculation that Mercedes may have deliberately managed its performance levels in order to avoid being identified as the reference manufacturer under the FIA’s ADUO framework.

It is important to remember that the ADUO system evaluates only the internal combustion engine component of each power unit. According to current assessments, Red Bull has emerged as the reference in that specific area. However, Lewis Hamilton questioned whether that ranking accurately reflects the real competitive picture.

“For one reason or another, it was all about deployment. At the end of the straights I kept losing ground, while the Mercedes just kept pulling away. They undoubtedly have the best engine. I don’t understand how the ADUO ranking ended up showing the exact opposite,” said the British driver.

Those comments carry particular significance because they come from a driver who spent twelve seasons with Mercedes and possesses extensive knowledge of how the German manufacturer operates behind the scenes.

Lewis Hamilton continued by adding: “They had incredible power at the end of the straights this weekend, much more than everyone else. I don’t know where all of that comes from. Is it the battery? Is it simply lower drag, a higher top speed, or the smaller turbo? And we were racing at high altitude as well.”

Memories of Mercedes’ previous power unit strategy

Lewis Hamilton’s observations inevitably revived memories of the beginning of Formula 1’s hybrid era. Back in 2014, former Mercedes High Performance Powertrains Managing Director Andy Cowell explained that there had been situations in which Mercedes intentionally avoided using the full potential of its power unit. The objective, he suggested at the time, was to avoid attracting excessive attention from the FIA and potentially prompting regulatory intervention aimed at reducing its competitive advantage.

There is no evidence that Mercedes is employing a similar strategy today. Nevertheless, Lewis Hamilton‘s remarks have once again reignited long-standing speculation within the paddock regarding the true performance potential of the German manufacturer’s hybrid package.

A growing psychological battle ahead of Silverstone

Although it would be an exaggeration to describe the relationship between Mercedes and Ferrari as openly hostile, the exchange of comments between the two teams has become increasingly noticeable.

On one side, Mercedes continues to question Ferrari’s remarkable development rate throughout the 2026 Formula 1 season. On the other, Ferrari—through the words of Lewis Hamilton—has cast fresh doubt over whether Mercedes is truly revealing the full capability of its power unit.

The topic is likely to remain one of the defining storylines of the 2026 championship. For now, however, attention shifts to Silverstone, where Lewis Hamilton returns to his home circuit, one of the most successful venues of his Formula 1 career. It is also a track where Mercedes is once again expected to arrive as one of the teams to beat, setting the stage for another fascinating chapter in the ongoing battle between two of Formula 1’s biggest rivals.
