Kimi Antonelli has provided new insight into a candid conversation he held with Lewis Hamilton during a challenging weekend at the Belgian Grand Prix. The young Mercedes driver faced one of the toughest weekends of his rookie Formula 1 season, as he came under intense pressure to deliver stronger results while the team competed for second place in the Constructors’ Championship.
Despite having accumulated 43% of the points that his teammate George Russell achieved, the 18-year-old Antonelli was visibly frustrated after failing to advance beyond Q3 in qualifying at the iconic Spa-Francorchamps circuit. His difficulties continued during the race, where he finished in 16th place — marking his worst performance since the Monaco Grand Prix — and ending a series of races in which he scored no points, aside from his earlier podium in Canada.
Before the Belgian Grand Prix race on Sunday, Hamilton was seen at the Mercedes motorhome, where he engaged in a conversation with Antonelli amid the Italian rookie’s struggles. Antonelli has since revealed the depth of that exchange during an interview with Canal+ F1, describing it as an “open” and supportive discussion.
Antonelli explained that while Hamilton later downplayed having sought him out specifically, the young driver confirmed that the seven-time World Champion did meet with him to offer encouragement after a particularly difficult weekend. He emphasized that Hamilton has always been a supportive figure, highlighting the veteran driver’s human approach to mentoring younger teammates.
According to Antonelli, during their chat at Spa, he spoke openly about his feelings and the challenges he was experiencing at that stage of his rookie season. He explained that he was very candid with Hamilton, discussing his performance struggles and the pressure he felt while navigating such a formative period in Formula 1. Antonelli noted that Hamilton listened attentively and provided reassurance, demonstrating his willingness to support up-and-coming talent during tough moments.
This interaction underscores the mentorship and guidance that established stars like Lewis Hamilton offer to rising drivers such as Kimi Antonelli, reflecting the importance of camaraderie and encouragement within the high-pressure environment of Formula 1. It also highlights how young drivers benefit not only from technical support but from the human element of advice and encouragement from experienced champions.
