George Russell’s victory in Baku has allowed Mercedes to write a new chapter in Formula 1 history. The Azerbaijan Grand Prix triumph takes Mercedes-powered cars to 252 Formula 1 victories, moving the German manufacturer ahead of Ferrari, which remains on 251.
The change at the top of the all-time ranking comes only one race after Mercedes drew level with Ferrari. At the Spanish Grand Prix, Kimi Antonelli delivered victory number 251 for Mercedes engines. In Baku, it was George Russell who completed the overtake and established the new record.
George Russell had started the Azerbaijan Grand Prix from pole position, having secured the front of the grid ahead of Charles Leclerc. The British driver then converted that starting position into victory after a hard-fought race, resisting pressure from Max Verstappen all the way to the chequered flag.
How Mercedes reached 252 Formula 1 engine victories
The new record includes victories achieved by Mercedes engines across several different Formula 1 teams. The power units are produced in Brixworth, Northamptonshire, England, at Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains.
The 252 Formula 1 victories powered by Mercedes are divided as follows:
- Mercedes: 142 victories
- McLaren: 101 victories
- Brawn GP: 8 victories
- Racing Point: 1 victory
That brings the total to 252 victories, one more than the 251 achieved by Ferrari engines. George Russell’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix success therefore gives Mercedes outright possession of the record and adds another significant milestone to the manufacturer’s Formula 1 history.
