Since the introduction of the hybrid technology in Formula 1 (the 2014 season), it is the first time that Mercedes and Toto Wolff have been witnessing a world championship battle without being directly involved, at least for the moment.
The superiority shown by the Ferrari F1-75 and Red Bull RB18 in this first part of the 2022 Formula One championship is too big to give Mercedes a lot of hope of being able to recover almost a second per lap in the current campaign and in time to turn things around in the world championship standings
But as seen on other many occasions, in Formula 1 you can never rule out anything and one important stage for the Anglo-German team seems to be the next round of the season, the Spanish Grand Prix at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, where the team intends to bring a new floor and new wings. However, in the event of a negative response and feedback from the updates, Mercedes may decide to focus its efforts directly on the 2023 project.
Meanwhile, Team Principal Toto Wolff already has a clear idea of the fight between Scuderia Ferrari and Red Bull for the 2021 F1 titles, which at the moment sees Charles Leclerc prevailing by 19 points in the Drivers standings and the Maranello team by six points in the Constructors standings ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix, and believes Red Bull remains the number one candidate for the world crown in 2022:
“Last year Max Verstappen drove a slower car than ours and won the title. Now, on the other hand, he has the fastest car available and therefore everything will be easier for him. My prediction is he will win the tilte”. – he explained.

When asked about Mercedes’ prospects for the 2022 Formula One season, the Austrian motorsport executive does not rule out an overbearing return of Mercedes: “We didn’t raise the white flag, only five races have passed. The world championship can also smile back at us, also because in terms of points we are not so far behind”.
In a recent interview for news portal oe24, Toto Wolff finally highlighted the importance of Montmelò for his team: “Barcelona will be interesting for us, because we tested here in February. But we have to be realistic, we are still the third force behind Ferrari and Red Bull.” – he concluded.
