Not every Formula 1 driver dreams of driving for Ferrari. According to recent discussions in the F1 world, there is one top driver who would only consider an offer from the legendary Scuderia under a very specific condition.
After the turbulent and highly scrutinized months in the F1 paddock, Max Verstappen has made the decision to remain with Red Bull Racing for the 2026 season. His current priority is to evaluate which team will have the fastest car on the grid and then carefully assess the most advantageous opportunities available to him. Among those opportunities, it is conceivable that Ferrari could be an option in the future, particularly since the Italian team may require a new driver for the 2027 season.
Lewis Hamilton continues to express uncertainty about his own future in Formula 1, especially after facing several challenges during the first part of the 2025 season. The seven-time world champion has a contract that extends through 2026, leaving it ultimately up to him to decide whether to extend for another year or step away.
Not Everyone Dreams of Ferrari
Despite Ferrari’s iconic status in motorsport, Max Verstappen may not be especially eager to move to Maranello. In fact, he would only consider such a move under a single, clear condition. This insight was shared by Canadian racing driver and commentator James Hinchcliffe in a recent interview.
Hinchcliffe explained that, unlike nearly all other drivers on the grid, Max Verstappen does not have an overwhelming passion for the Ferrari brand. Joining the Scuderia and winning a championship dressed in red does not hold the same emotional appeal for him as it does for many others. For Verstappen, what truly matters is driving the fastest car on the grid.
“If the fastest car is at Mercedes, he will naturally aim to go there,” James Hinchcliffe explained. “If it happens to be Ferrari, then he might consider heading to Maranello. It is not an emotional decision for him. Every driver wants the best possible machinery, and whoever provides that opportunity will have the chance to secure Verstappen’s services.”
This perspective highlights Max Verstappen’s pragmatic and results-driven approach to his career. Unlike the traditional narrative where driving for Ferrari is seen as the pinnacle of any F1 driver’s ambitions, Verstappen is focused first and foremost on performance, team resources, and the potential to compete consistently for victories and championships.
By placing priority on engineering excellence and competitive advantage rather than emotional or brand loyalty, Max Verstappen’s career strategy underscores the modern professional F1 driver’s mindset: success is measured by results on the track, not merely by the prestige of the team badge.
With Lewis Hamilton’s future in question and Red Bull providing a competitive package for 2026, Max Verstappen’s cautious but calculated approach ensures that he maximizes his opportunities without being swayed by traditional allure or heritage. Ferrari, while historically the most iconic team in Formula 1, will need to provide the right technical package and competitive prospects to attract the reigning World Champion should a vacancy arise in 2027.
As the F1 grid continues to evolve and the championship battles intensify, the question of whether Verstappen will one day trade his Red Bull for a Ferrari remains one of the sport’s most intriguing possibilities. For fans of the Italian team, it represents both a challenge and a tantalizing prospect: the Scuderia must not only build a winning car but also create an environment capable of attracting drivers who prioritize victory above all else.
