Max Verstappen has been linked to a potential move to Ferrari for the 2027 season, with speculation growing over the four-time world champion’s future as the Formula 1 landscape evolves under the new regulations. Reports suggest that Verstappen will carefully evaluate his options once the hierarchy among teams becomes clearer.
A report in September indicated that Verstappen is seriously considering Ferrari as a possible destination for 2027. Although his current Red Bull contract runs until the end of 2028, it is widely believed to include an exit clause, allowing Max Verstappen to leave if he falls below a specific position in the standings at a designated point in the season. Sources suggest that the threshold for leaving may be higher than it was this year, likely requiring a top-three standing.
Within the paddock, it is widely expected that Ferrari will not extend Lewis Hamilton’s contract, potentially opening a seat alongside Charles Leclerc. This situation has intensified speculation about Verstappen’s future, especially given his high-profile rivalries and status as one of the sport’s most dominant drivers.
Verstappen’s past criticisms of Ferrari could influence any potential move. According to Autosport Web, while Verstappen would largely have freedom to choose his next team, McLaren is effectively off-limits, as the team has repeatedly insisted it already possesses the strongest driver lineup in F1. Autosport Web further notes that Verstappen would need to “backtrack on some comments” he made about Ferrari a few years ago to make a switch feasible. Though not specified, these remarks likely refer to his 2019 accusation that Ferrari was “cheating” with their power unit, a claim that was strongly denied by then-team principal Mattia Binotto, who described it as “completely wrong.”
The controversy originally stemmed from Ferrari’s interpretation of the fuel-flow regulations. The FIA subsequently issued several technical directives to clarify the rules and reached a settlement with Ferrari at the start of the following season. Verstappen had suggested that Ferrari’s failure to secure a podium at the US Grand Prix, after the issuance of one of these directives, supported his theory. The four-time world champion later admitted that he should have taken “one or two more minutes” to consider his words before giving the explosive interview.
Any future negotiations between the Dutchman and Ferrari could involve a more explicit retraction of his past comments. However, Max Verstappen is known as one of F1’s most uncompromising drivers, rarely showing remorse publicly. Questions also remain about whether he would be willing to give up his number-one status at Red Bull. Despite showing “deep respect” for Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen is confident in his ability to challenge any driver on the grid.
A pairing of Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc could prove to be one of the most electrifying duos in Formula 1 history, offering a potential blend of raw speed, technical skill, and intense competition that would captivate fans around the world.
