Max Verstappen stuns on Nürburgring GT3 debut amid Ferrari F1 speculation
Max Verstappen made a sensational debut at the Nürburgring, claiming victory alongside co-driver Chris Lulham in a 4-hour NLS endurance race driving a Ferrari 296 GT3. The win has reignited speculation about a potential future move to Maranello, with fans and analysts drawing links between Verstappen’s sports car exploits and Formula 1 opportunities.
The four-time Formula 1 world champion piloted the Ferrari 296 GT3, adorned in Red Bull-inspired livery, during his first competitive outing in endurance racing at the legendary Nordschleife. Verstappen immediately took the lead on the opening corner and never looked back, crossing the finish line more than 20 seconds ahead of the competition alongside Lulham.
Verstappen’s GT3 debut had been long anticipated. The Dutch driver previously tested the Ferrari in secret under the pseudonym “Franz Hermann,” signaling his interest in exploring other motorsport categories beyond Formula 1. At just 27 years old, Verstappen has made it clear that expanding his racing horizons is a priority, and his dominant performance at the Nürburgring highlighted his adaptability and natural talent behind the wheel of different machinery.
Observers described Verstappen’s pace as “almost impossible to explain,” with the driver immediately demonstrating top-class skill and effortlessly outpacing the field. Following this debut, Verstappen is reportedly eyeing an entry in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring in 2026, a move confirmed by Helmut Marko, who stated that the Dutchman has secured the necessary permits to compete. The event is scheduled to take place between the Miami and Canadian Grand Prix, adding another highlight to Verstappen’s already busy 2026 calendar.
Ferrari fans react to Verstappen’s GT3 win
According to the Italian media, it was inevitable that Ferrari supporters would draw comparisons between Verstappen’s GT3 performance and the possibility of a future Formula 1 partnership with Maranello. Social media channels were flooded with praise from the Tifosi, celebrating the Dutchman’s triumph in the Prancing Horse, despite his current affiliation with Red Bull Racing.
Verstappen is contracted with Red Bull until 2028, yet earlier in 2025 there was significant speculation about an early exit from Milton Keynes. Mercedes were among the teams pursuing the Dutchman aggressively, though the four-time F1 world champion ultimately reaffirmed his commitment to Red Bull for the 2026 season. During this period, he reportedly also held discussions with Ferrari, according to his father, Jos Verstappen.
While Verstappen currently has no official ties to Ferrari beyond the GT3 program, he has shown a deep understanding of what it means to represent the marque. Sources note that the four-time F1 champion recognizes driving a Ferrari carries a responsibility to win, not merely a prestige boost. This principle, Verstappen understands, applies across all forms of motorsport and underscores the seriousness with which he approached his Nürburgring debut.
Red Bull future and Ferrari links
Although Verstappen has confirmed his 2026 commitment to Red Bull, uncertainties remain for seasons beyond, despite having a contract until 2028. The driver has favorable exit clauses for 2026, which could allow him to leave if Red Bull fails to finish among the top two in the drivers’ championship. Should the team’s new power unit, developed in collaboration with Ford, fall short of expectations, Ferrari could become a viable destination for Verstappen.
Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton is out of contract in 2026 but can extend until 2027. If the Briton chooses to step away from Formula 1, Ferrari would reportedly be keen to explore the possibility of pairing Verstappen with Charles Leclerc, offering the Dutchman a pathway to Maranello. Reports suggest Verstappen is “waiting in the wings” for such an opportunity, keeping the Ferrari speculation alive as the 2025 F1 season continues.
For now, however, the Tifosi can enjoy Max Verstappen’s exploits in Ferrari’s GT3 machinery while the Prancing Horse continues its search for a maiden victory in the 2025 Formula 1 campaign. His Nürburgring triumph demonstrates that Verstappen’s versatility and skill extend well beyond Formula 1, making him a driver to watch across multiple categories of motorsport.
