Former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard believes Ferrari could offer Max Verstappen a far more natural environment than Mercedes if the reigning world champion eventually decides to leave Red Bull Racing.
Speculation surrounding Max Verstappen’s long-term Formula 1 future continues to intensify as uncertainty grows around the new 2026 regulations and Red Bull’s ability to remain at the front of the grid. While the Dutch driver remains under contract, reports throughout the paddock continue to link him with potential blockbuster moves to both Mercedes and Ferrari.
Although Mercedes have repeatedly been viewed as the most realistic destination for Max Verstappen due to Toto Wolff’s long-standing admiration for the four-time world champion, David Coulthard suggested that Ferrari’s atmosphere and culture may actually be a more comfortable fit for the Red Bull driver.
Ferrari increasingly linked with Max Verstappen amid Formula 1 uncertainty
Questions surrounding Max Verstappen’s future have become one of the biggest talking points in Formula 1 as teams prepare for the major regulation overhaul arriving in 2026. The uncertainty over competitive performance under the new technical era has opened the door to growing rumours involving several top drivers.
Max Verstappen has previously expressed frustration regarding the direction Formula 1 is taking with its future regulations, even hinting that he could consider stepping away from the sport earlier than expected if the racing experience changes too dramatically.
At the same time, rival teams continue monitoring the situation closely. Mercedes remain heavily associated with Max Verstappen due to their previous interest in securing his signature, although the strong performances from George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli have complicated the situation.
George Russell’s contract status has also become a topic of discussion across the Formula 1 paddock. Former world champion Damon Hill recently suggested that the uncertainty surrounding the British driver’s future could potentially weaken Mercedes’ position internally if negotiations continue without long-term clarity.
Alongside Mercedes, Ferrari have also emerged as a serious long-term possibility. With uncertainty surrounding both Charles Leclerc’s contractual future and Lewis Hamilton’s long-term plans with the Scuderia, some insiders believe Ferrari could eventually reshape its entire driver line-up around Max Verstappen.
David Coulthard sees Ferrari as a more natural fit for Max Verstappen
Speaking about Max Verstappen’s possible future options, David Coulthard explained that Ferrari’s environment could allow the Dutch driver to operate with greater freedom and less corporate restriction compared to Mercedes.
The former McLaren and Red Bull driver indicated that Max Verstappen’s personality and racing style appeared more aligned with Ferrari’s culture than the highly structured atmosphere traditionally associated with Mercedes.
David Coulthard explained during the Up To Speed podcast that, in his view, Max Verstappen naturally suited the Ferrari world more comfortably than the Mercedes environment. He also acknowledged that Max Verstappen already has strong relationships with Mercedes through his GT3 racing activities away from Formula 1.
However, the former F1 driver suggested that Ferrari would likely allow Max Verstappen greater personal freedom, enabling him to focus almost exclusively on driving, winning races, and maintaining his preferred lifestyle outside Formula 1 commitments.
Ferrari future remains uncertain for Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton
The growing rumours surrounding Max Verstappen also come at a sensitive moment for Ferrari’s current driver line-up. Charles Leclerc remains deeply connected to the Maranello project, but reports have indicated the existence of contractual clauses that could potentially become relevant depending on Ferrari’s competitiveness during the new regulation cycle.
Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton’s future beyond the early stages of his Ferrari career continues to attract speculation throughout Formula 1. Although the seven-time world champion remains fully committed to helping Ferrari return to championship-winning form, questions naturally remain over how long Lewis Hamilton intends to continue competing at the highest level.
Former Renault driver Jolyon Palmer recently suggested that, if Ferrari ever pursued Max Verstappen aggressively, Charles Leclerc could potentially be the driver most vulnerable to replacement depending on contract conditions and long-term team strategy.
Red Bull upgrades boost Max Verstappen confidence again
Despite the growing transfer rumours, Red Bull Racing may have strengthened their position considerably after introducing encouraging upgrades during the Miami Grand Prix weekend.
The updated RB22 appeared significantly more competitive in Miami, helping Max Verstappen secure a front-row grid position for the first time this season. Even after suffering a spin on the opening lap and later receiving a five-second penalty for crossing the pit exit line, the Dutch driver still recovered to finish in fifth position.
Former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher stated after the Miami weekend that Max Verstappen looked fully re-energised after finally receiving what he described as a far more “drivable” Red Bull car.
Max Verstappen himself admitted during the weekend that he felt increasingly comfortable behind the wheel of the RB22 compared to earlier races this season. Reports also suggested that people close to the Dutch driver noticed a renewed sense of motivation and excitement throughout the Miami Grand Prix weekend.
Whether Red Bull Racing can maintain that upward trajectory over the coming races remains uncertain, especially as McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes continue introducing aggressive development packages. However, the latest progress appears to have restored optimism around Max Verstappen’s short-term future with the Milton Keynes-based team.
For now, Formula 1’s driver market remains wide open, and any future decision involving Max Verstappen, Ferrari, Mercedes, Charles Leclerc or Lewis Hamilton is likely to remain one of the defining stories shaping the sport’s next era.
