At the end of the morning session of the first pre-season testing day in Bahrain, Red Bull Racing Dutch driver Max Verstappen took part in a press conference and was asked by the media to share his thoughts on Mercedes, who have revealed a radical new development on their W13 car ahead of today’s testing session. The team’s W13 appeared in the paddock at Bahrain International Circuit featuring revised, much slimmer sidepods.
Max Verstappen admitted that he is “not concerned” by Mercedes’ new-look car and new sidepod design which has raised eyebrows in Bahrain: “We can only focus on ourselves,” stated the reigning Formula 1 world champion in the lunchtime press conference – “I said this so many times last year and that’s what we’ve got to do again this year. Even if the car looks different, there are so many unknown things still that we need to learn about. So I’m not worried at all.” – he explained.
Max Verstappen ended the press conference being asked about Scuderia Ferrari and their current strong form in the testing sessions, admitting he was impressed by the Maranello team’s pace at this stage: “They look strong, very solid. Very decent, they’re quick. You can clearly see that in the long run, short run. I hope we can match them or be close to them in Q3” – the Red Bull Racing driver concluded.
