Max Verstappen has always had the talent, from his karting days, to make a major mark in Formula 1, which he has certainly done, dominating rivals and teammates alike while earning respect for his transparency and honesty.
In this context, during the speed temple weekend, he was asked to identify the best drivers in specific areas — from qualifying to race mentality — with just one rule: he could not name himself. Between sincere reflections and some hesitation, the Dutchman pointed to Charles Leclerc and Fernando Alonso as the most complete, recognizing their talent, experience, and fighting spirit. An honest and respectful portrait from one of the dominant figures of recent years.
Who are the best drivers on the grid according to Max Verstappen?
Max Verstappen gave an exclusive interview to Mundo Deportivo ahead of the 2025 Italian Grand Prix. Just days before stunning the world with a record-breaking pole position — the fastest in F1 history — and a commanding victory over the McLaren, he agreed to take a “quick test” to name the best driver according to specific criteria.
The reigning world champion had to indicate the top driver in each area: qualifying, race management, intelligence, overtaking, and defense, with one constraint: he could not choose himself. Verstappen answered openly, offering clear and well-reasoned judgments.
Qualifying: who is the best?
When asked about the fastest driver on Saturdays, Verstappen had no doubts.
“Uff, this is tough, but I think currently… I’ve always considered Charles Leclerc an excellent qualifier.”
Leclerc has repeatedly taken cars to pole that should not have even reached the front rows. This recognition confirms his talent and carries even more weight coming from a historic rival like Verstappen.
In the race? The best is…
Race management is the most complex art in F1, involving strategy, defense, cunning, and uncontrollable factors. For Verstappen, the master remains Fernando Alonso.
Despite being over forty, the Spaniard continues to demonstrate intelligence and determination. A memorable incident from a few years ago: while being chased by Perez in the Red Bull, Alonso strategically used the battery, charging it in the corners and discharging it on the straights, successfully defending his position even with an inferior car.
“What do I like? I don’t know. I’ve always enjoyed watching Fernando in races. He’s a true fighter. I really like that. Intelligence? I would always choose experience. No, I don’t want to name myself… so I’d pick Fernando Alonso for his experience and his defensive skills!”
Overtaking, a decisive factor
In F1, overtaking is the essence of the spectacle and often the only weapon for those who don’t start at the front. For Verstappen, one of the most effective in wheel-to-wheel combat is once again Leclerc.
“Charles Leclerc is excellent at overtaking.”
Who is the greatest driver of all?
At this point, the inevitable question arises: who is the greatest of all time? Verstappen, however, does not commit.
“For me, it’s impossible to say. There are so many great drivers from different eras. I think it’s more important to appreciate all the talented drivers who have existed.”
