Max Verstappen emphasized that for a driver like Lewis Hamilton, comfort within the team is essential to perform at the highest level. Drawing on his own experiences at Red Bull, the Dutchman noted how critical team dynamics and familiarity are for extracting peak performance from a car.
Lewis Hamilton’s 2025 Formula 1 season with Ferrari has been challenging so far. Despite the high expectations following his move, he has yet to reach the podium in the first 16 races and has suffered several low finishes. Nevertheless, he remains committed to his dream of racing for Ferrari and is working to adapt to the new team environment.
“If you don’t feel secure or comfortable within the team dynamic you cannot be yourself and that has an impact,” Max Verstappen commented during the Qatar Grand Prix weekend.
“You leave a team that has been your second family in Mercedes and you have built up such a career with them. Everyone benefitted off that, Mercedes and Lewis, and then going in a completely different route is not easy, plus you are going up against a guy that has been there for a while. It is very tough.”
“And age is not on your side. You are not going to become faster at that age, not necessarily slower, but definitely not faster, whereas Charles is still getting better so that is also not helping him.”
Max Verstappen’s comments underline the unique difficulties Lewis Hamilton faces in his Ferrari debut season. Competing against Leclerc, who has been with the team for several years and is still improving, adds another layer of pressure. Combined with adapting to a new car, team culture, and setup philosophy, the Briton’s challenge is as much about integration as it is about outright speed on track.
For Ferrari fans, this season highlights the importance of patience and support for their new driver. Lewis Hamilton’s talent is undeniable, but Max Verstappen’s observations remind everyone that even the greatest champions need time to adjust when transitioning to a different team and car.
