Maurizio Arrivabene interview for Build. Here are some of the most important aspects highlighted by Scuderia Ferrari’s Team Principal.
On Mattia Binotto possibly leaving Ferrari: “Once and for all, certain things that have come out (news about Binotto and Arrivabene having a bad relationship) are fake news in order to destabilize (the team). And I refuse to even comment that! During this season there have been many attempts to destabilize the team, sometimes with stories about our drivers, others about the engineers. My position? (smiles) Ask the managing director Camilleri for that.”
On Charles Leclerc joining Ferrari: “I‘ve known Leclerc since 2016 and we saw that he was a boy with great talents which he also confirmed this season. His goal next year will be to gain experience. This is the most important aspect, to not get carried away and learn from Sebastian! Leclerc has the luxury of being able to face a season in which he will be asked to bring the car back to the pits and as forward as he can in the standings, but without pressure. Like a sponge, Leclerc will have to absorb the tricks (knowledge) from a highly experienced driver like Sebastian.”
On working with Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen: “Räikkönen and Vettel are similar in many aspects, but while with Kimi in some moments you need to talk a bit more with him, with Seb you need to make him feel the support of the team. Seb was blamed a lot of what happened in Monza, because he was tremendously trying to give great satisfaction to the fans and he struggled a lot to digest the outcome of that weekend. In that sense it didn‘t help Seb that the car was not at its best in the following races. But it’s understandable problems and the human factor is important.”
On then difference between Ferrari and Mercedes: “There are areas where we are superior, others where Mercedes are. But I think we still lack the habit to win. For them a double win is something ordinary, for us an event that is exceptional. We must be more aware of our means and not be afraid of winning. The fear of winning that comes when you are close to the goal, we must trust ourselves and make the victory a good habit.”
