A dramatic late collision on the 66th lap at Interlagos between four-time champion Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc happened when they were fighting for fourth position. Both failed to finish.
Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto reflects on the incident between Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc at the Brazilian Grand Prix:
“It’s not about putting the blame on one of the drivers. But it is important that everyone admits when they have made a mistake. Only then you can develop further. Now we have to find out exactly what happened. That’s what we do calmly. We have been criticized in the past for telling the drivers too much what they should do in a battle (team order). Now we let them fight, and it’s not right either. We always have reasons for our decisions.” – the Ferrari boss explained.
“Today it was right to let them race freely. But as a driver on the track you always have to choose the right level of risk. The risk was unnecessary today. For me it was just a silly action.” – he added, as reported by AMuS.
At the same time, Mattia Binotto did not share the opinion of many experts that such a collision was inevitable after Monza/Sochi: “After Monza, we had a talk. From my point of view, the drivers had a good relationship lately. But the race now certainly didn’t help in this respect. At least this gives us the opportunity to clarify the internal rules again before the upcoming season so that this doesn’t happen again in the future. This can not happen again.” – the Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal concluded.
