Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto remains calm despite Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz’s double DNF in the 2022 Formula Azerbaijan Grand Prix at the Baku City Circuit. Here are the first comments and impressions of the Ferrari boss after Carlos Sainz suffered an early DNF due to a hydraulic failure on lap nine, leaving his Maranello teammate Charles Leclerc the only Ferrari left to battle the Red Bull cars of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez.

Charles Leclerc, however, lasted just 11 further laps before a blown engine saw his own race end early, as Max Verstappen has extended his Formula One championship lead.

“We are not going to be dramatic about today. We must understand the problems and try to solve them. We will be even stronger in the future. It takes patience sometimes. It can turn.” – the Ferrari boss said, in his first interview after the double retirement in Baku.

“Our strategy was the best. It is the others who made a mistake. The pit stop in Virtual Safety Car had given us an advantage: with the mediums we were competitive and we went for the hards which are more resistant and always work well for us. We will analyze but we do not have the time to correct or make structural changes for Canada. We have to manage it, we will clearly have to take new components. I don’t think the issue with Zhou is related to power unit. Whatever is happening there is useful. We do not supply customer teams for business, but for feedback. So whatever is happening is useful, and we will analyze it. First we need to analyze what happened. I don’t know yet [if fixes for reliability are coming]. The issues we have had are unrelated. It could be a quick fix, but we don’t know. As we didn’t get euphoric at the start of the season, we will not be devastated now.
