In a recent interview for Sky Sport F1, Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto once again discussed the situation of the 2019 engine, reitarting that the engine was legal:
“The FIA has never found us doing something illegal otherwise we would have been disqualified. And no opponent protested. If there had been a blatant irregularity I would have expected any opponent to protest. We have been in the grey area [PU] for the whole 2019 season, until winter, when a directive was made with our help that prevented certain things from being done on the power units. This had an impact on everyone. But it hurt us more than others as seen currently.” – the Ferrari boss explained.
Mattia Binotto says both the FIA and Scuderia Ferrari came to an agreement to avoid complex and costly investigations: “They would have led to a waste of energy and costs on both sides. The agreement was to say: let’s focus on the future and let’s help each other understanding the grey areas. The secret agreement is normal! Should we have shown everyone our engine and secrets? I don’t think anyone has ever done this in F1 and nobody ever will in the future.” – he added.
As for next season, the Ferrari Team Principal said:
“We have very challenging goals for 2021. I see a very united team that wants to do well. Next year we will have a completely new engine that is running well on the test bench and we have ideas in regards to the car. Regarding the car, miracles can’t be done[…] Realistically, Ferrari will not be able to fight for the championship in 2021. Next year we must return to fighting regularly for podiums. That is our goal.” – he concluded.
