Having finished in the lead all three free practice sessions for the Spanish Grand Prix at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, and after taking pole position with a great lap on Saturday, Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc was unable to finish the job on Sunday in the race. A painful retirement, which was no fault of his own, but was caused by a power unit problem, that ruined Ferrari’s plans on a day in which victory was almost secured given the 13-second gap which Charles Leclerc had in front of Red Bull before the engine issue on lap 26.
During his interview for Sky Sports after the Spanish Grand Prix retirement, Charles Leclerc tried to remain positive, emphasizing the competitiveness of the F1-75 car and ensuring that he once again found the feeling with the car which he seemed to have lost in recent races, especially in terms of managing tire degradation.
Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto also did not hide his disappointment for how events unfolded in the 2022 Spanish Grand Prix at the Circuit de Catalunya, in his interview in front if the Sky Uk microphones: “It is certainly a hard day for us. I listened to Charles’s analysis and we have to look to the positive this weekend. It will be a long season, in the past it happened to others and today it happened to us.” However, the Ferrari boss seemed calm about the problem with the Ferrari power unit that ended Charles Leclerc’s hope of winning the Spanish Grand Prix: “We can’t blame anyone for this situation and I don’t think it’s an important problem with the engine. Maybe it‘s only a couple of components that can’t be used. But we need to analyse it first.”
