In a recent interview for the Italian media, Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto confirmed that the 2022 Ferrari car is at an advanced stage of development:
“We are at a point where important choices are being made on aerodynamic concepts. In a month’s time, they’ll be defined and then we’ll start producing the first parts. Then we’ll work on the details, on the aerodynamic geometries.”
The first chassis [2022 Ferrari F1 Car] will therefore be ready by the end of the summer: “At this moment the new single-seater is growing in line with our forecasts. At Ferrari, we are totally focused on the 2022 car and in line with our schedule. It is a completely different car from the current one and we cannot afford to lose even a week of development, judging by the progress we see.”
“From the following season, the engine is frozen for the next three years, so important directions must be taken here too. We have to use a new fuel with 10% ethanol. It sounds simple, but the combustion characteristics change completely. The power unit will be heavily revised to reflect the new regulations. There are limitations on the number of test bench hours here too. You have to be efficient in your development. Ferrari is taking advantage of every opportunity: for example we took advantage of Mercedes’ forfeit to take part in the Pirelli tests on wet weather compounds.” – the Ferrari boss explained.
Mattia Binotto on the topic of Red Bull hiring engineers from other teams: “In the last three years more than 30 engineers have been hired from other teams. Red Bull is announcing it, while we are doing it without making it known.”
Mattia Binotto on the new regulations: “The new regulations have the primary objective of creating a close competition between the various teams. But in the beginning I don’t think it will happen. Perhaps over the years we will see some convergence. The other objective is to facilitate overtaking to improve the show. But even in this case, I have my doubts that we will be able to achieve it. Even now, from the simulation data, you can see that the 2022 cars will have a great performance. And in these cases, there is always a certain aerodynamic disturbance for the car that is following. It’s not necessarily the case that changing the aerodynamic concepts is enough….”
