The singular circumstance of the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix, with the constant delayed starts and the intensity of the rain that shows no sign of stopping, caught the organizers and teams off guard, unsure of what will happen in the next few hours. Among these there is also Ferrari and its drivers, still stationary in the pit lane together with their mechanics awaiting official decisions.
In this uncertain situation, Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto expressed his opinion at the microphones of Sky Sport F1: “Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc are looking to stay focused – commented the Red team principal – one went to the office where it is wormer, the other is in the pits with the mechanics. The important thing is to stay focused, also because the wait can be long. The weather indicates heavy rain for 45 minutes or an hour, so you will have to wait a long time before starting again, if you can. From 15 to 18 – he specified – the race can be run, but after 18 it automatically ends by regulation. We hope for an improvement, there is still time “.
With regard to the hypothesis of postponing the event to tomorrow, Mattia Binotto did not express a favorable opinion on this opportunity, also specifying the possible halving of the points: “No, at 6 pm it ends – he answered decisively who is preparing to experience his 50th presence in the pits as team principal – for now there have been continuous postponements and suspensions, but when we cross the finish line for the first time, the race will actually start with the first lap. If, from that moment, they manage to complete at least 33 laps, points will be awarded without being halved. It doesn’t matter if behind the safety car or not”.
Among the most discussed topics before a possible start, there is also the opportunity to see Sergio Perez again on the track, the protagonist of an accident before positioning himself on the starting grid that had forced him, at least initially, not to participate in the event: “I don’t think there is an exception for the race – admitted Binotto – but I don’t have an exact answer. If they manage to repair his car and reposition himself, he can start.”
