In a recent interview for German tabloid newspaper Bild, Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto was asked why he went up the podium to collect the trophy (Bahrain):
“Normally it‘s not my style. I thought about it a lot. I felt that it was the best way to represent the whole team there. If we had chosen someone from the engine or aerodynamic department, it would only have represented part of it. I wanted to show: this double victory (1-2) belongs to all of us! If we had chosen someone from the engine or aerodynamic department, it would only have represented part of it. I wanted to show: this double victory (1-2) belongs to all of us!”
Was it a spontaneous idea or was it planned for a long time?
Mattia Binotto: “I thought about it during the week before the race and decided it after the race.”
Were you happy after the race in Jeddah (2-3) or upset over the lost win?
Mattia Binotto: “First of all, we all saw a great show from two strong drivers Charles and Max. In the end, it didn’t go our way, but we were competitive once again and that’s the most important thing. We have scored 78 out of 88 points, which is definitely a considerable number to be happy about. Everyone at Ferrari has been waiting for the new season and we have put a lot of work and passion into it. We knew we had a good car, but we didn’t realise how good it was until after the race in Bahrain. It was a big relief for all of us.”
“Racing, fighting and winning is part of our DNA. That’s where we belong. We are in a good position to start the season.”

In a good position for what? To become world champion?
Mattia Binotto: “In a good position to be able to compete for wins in every race. In Bahrain we maximised our performance and in Jeddah it was confirmed how competitive our car is. We also know what we need to focus on in the coming months. Development will play a key role this season for the second part of the championship. We are enjoying this good start, but we are ready to fight at every race to maintain this level of performance.”
You witnessed this winning mentality at Ferrari with Michael Schumacher.
Mattia Binotto: “It was a fantastic time and I’m proud to have been part of it. I learned a lot from him. I picked up this mentality and ability to be a leader from him. I will never forget that.”
