Scuderia Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto has admitted that there is no “magic wand” which could guarantee future success for the Maranello team despite the Italian side’s improvement in the 2021 Formula 1 season and the new rules which will be introduced in 2022.
In the campaign following their worst Constructors’ Championship finish for 40 years, Scuderia Ferrari was able to fight its way back up to finish P3 after a close battle with McLaren, which was won after a strong final part of the season for Ferrari, that also included a power unit upgrade.
Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto rated both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz at eight out of 10 for their performance during the 2021 F1 championship, as the Spanish and Moneagsque drivers worked well to help the Maranello team finish behind Mercedes and Red Bull, which were out of reach in this year.
However, Mattia Binotto explained that the trying years of late have shown the need for the Maranello team to be patient in their search to get back to the front, as the Italian side scored its last race win two years ago in the Singapore Grand Prix.
“They have taught us it is difficult,” Mattia Binotto said, when asked by Sky Italy about their fallow years. “Not even in Formula 1 does a magic wand exist. It’s about working seriously, trying to improve continuously and you have to do it step by step. You have to be better than we have been. These two years have taught us the fatigue of not being able to compete for the best positions and to be patient. After all, we can’t say we are satisfied, and we are not happy to see others celebrating. So I say fatigue, patience and when it’s important, to improve in order to reach these goals and objectives of ours.” – he added.

Ferrari’s last Drivers’ Championship was won in 2007 and the Maranello team’s latest Constructors’ crown dates back to 2008, so it has been a long time since the Scuderia have headed the field over the course of a championship. Mattia Binotto confirmed the team need to get back to the forefront of Formula 1 and while there were signs of encouragement with several podiums and even two pole positions for Charles Leclerc on the streets of Monte Carlo and Baku in 2021, he emphasised the goal of being able to challenge Red Bull and Mercedes at every race:
“For Ferrari to get back in front is our responsibility As Ferrari, winning must always be the objective. An obligation is a presumption. In F1, nobody can say they will win before they even get on the track. In our DNA, however, there is the need to compete and fight for pole positions and victories every time. This is a goal the whole team has very clear. We are all working hard to get the team back to where it belongs, with the best.” – the Ferrari team principal concluded.
